Today we chatted with Eric Baptizat, Game Director at Ubisoft, about optimizing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla for Xbox Series X | S.

What are you most excited about developing and bringing to life Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on next-gen hardware?

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is set in the Middle Ages of England and allows the player to travel from Norway to England, moving freely through a vast world, whether on foot, on horseback, by boat or from the point of view of a crow. The next generation represents an opportunity for us to improve the graphical quality of the game in order to offer the best possible experience.

In addition to the power and performance of Xbox Series X | S for faster loading times, etc., what Xbox Series X | S features were you most excited about developing? Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?

When you play for the first time on Xbox Series X, you immediately notice the benefits of constant 60 FPS gameplay. Immediately everything feels fluid and comfortable, the whole experience feels better and it becomes a real delight to explore the world and rotate the camera even in the busiest location in the game. From a gameplay point of view, it means that the responsiveness of your action is instantaneous and makes everything feel more immersive.

How will these improvements impact the experience of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?

Added improvements to player quality of life. For example, faster load times that translate into a more agile way to teleport from one side of the world to another, resulting in a change in player habits. Players who would not dare to visit a distant place will now see it as achievable, without feeling it as a duty.

Why did you decide to focus on higher resolution, visual fidelity, and drawing distances to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?

The quality of the player experience is our main focus. It gives us a sense of greater freedom to deliver unprecedented depth and detail in our games. On Xbox Series X we use a antialiasing Highly sophisticated variable resolution timeline to generate a 4K HDR image at a constant frame rate of 60 FPS.

How do you think fans will respond to these improvements?

Players will immediately feel the difference, as the experience is smoother and faster… just better.

How was the process of developing games for Xbox Series X | S?

It’s always fun and challenging to develop on a new console, what people might not notice is that next-gen consoles were created the same time we created our game. The challenge for us during production was to use the full potential even though we didn’t know the final form yet.

Which improvements were you most excited about Xbox Series X | S when developing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?

Next-gen consoles allowed us to eliminate the unwanted friction that we have in the game due to technological limitations. Loading times, as well as other waiting times, were drastically reduced. In the end, the game gives you an experience to travel the world more smoothly, especially when navigating at high speed (for example, the raven, the ship).

What does Smart Delivery mean for your game and how will you carry Assassin’s Creed Valhalla to the fans?

It represents an amazing feature for the console build transition. For gamers it means that they can continue their experience on their new console and even maintain their progress by saving their information to the cloud. It represents one less concern.

What enables next-generation development in current or future projects that could not have been achieved with the previous generation of consoles?

Progressively, Xbox Series X | S will allow us to take a big step forward to fulfill our creative vision. Being able to offer huge open worlds full of content with the highest quality possible will help us push the limits of creativity. We’re very excited to see just how far we can push those next-gen console limits and how creators will use this power to define new kinds of gaming experiences.
