After an action-packed 2021 for Sea of Thieves, we are planning another exciting year in 2022 for all the pirates who sail our seas. Last year, we reached some important milestones: we surpassed 25 million players in total and sold five million copies on Steam alone, so we have a great mission ahead of us, so we ask you to prepare yourself for great challenges! If you don’t already have it, find it in the Microsoft Store (Argentina, chili, Colombia Y Mexico).
Instead of revealing our content update plans one at a time, this year, we’re doing something different. To reveal our intentions for Sea of Thieves In 2022, we’ve prepared a special video where our creative director Mike Chapman and a few other familiar faces from Rare will explain the next steps in our great pirate odyssey. Get comfortable, go get your popcorn and find something to drink so you can see our plans.
an adventure awaits you
With Season updates continuing to shape Sea of Thieves, one of our main goals for 2022 is to develop our pirate world and make it more dynamic. Stories, whether they are the ones we tell or the ones our community creates, are at the heart of Sea of Thievesso we want to inspire new stories of exploits and fellowship.
Enter the Adventures and Mysteries. These story-focused events are designed to complement the seasons, with ongoing narrative content for you to dig into the story alongside other gameplay features that our seasonal content releases bring. The Adventures will be time-limited, releasing monthly and available for 2-3 weeks, each forming a chapter within an overall narrative. Cutscenes will help you understand the story, and a final adventure will culminate each story arc. Our first adventure, ‘Shrouded Islands’, will be released on February 17th. Set your alarm so you don’t miss the big premiere!
The Mysteries will play out alongside the Adventures and will remain a part of the world for longer. Here, you will solve clues and puzzles both inside and outside the game to advance the story. The Mysteries will make the world of Sea of Thieves feel more enriched than ever and, although the themes of these Mysteries can be varied, we can tell you that the first one will involve you in the investigation of a murder…
a fortuitous arrival
Seasons will continue to bring new features and content, along with new seasonal rewards, Pirate Emporium actions, and optional Raid Passes to increase the rewards you’ll receive upon leveling up to 100. Starting in March, Season Six will be headlined by an experience of new combat and exploration: Sea Forts.
Throughout the world, you will find 6 Sea Forts, mined from the Sea of the Damned and protected by Phantom patrols. Get ready to do battle with these ghostly enemies and collect keys to fully explore each Sea Fort, where you’ll take down their toughest defenders to claim the loot inside the treasure chest. Sea Forts are also intertwined with the action that unfolds during our first series of Adventures, so keep an eye out for more of these new locations appearing in Sea of Thieves.
In the second half of Season Six, we want to bring you something the community has been asking for for a long time: new content for Pirate Legends! We plan for it to take the form of a new Legend-exclusive journey packed with stories and a series of challenges that will change every time you set sail. We don’t want to reveal too many details yet… but you can look forward to new locations and treasures with special maps…
Farewell to arms!
Along with this exciting new content, as a team, we’re working hard to implement feedback on some of the most recurring topics in the community, dedicating whatever resources we can to improve the features that matter most to you. However, completely shifting focus to making Adventure mode the best it can be means we have to make tough decisions elsewhere. So, after long internal discussions, we made the difficult decision to close the Arena mode of Sea of Thieves in the coming months.
With the scope of Sea of Thieves ever larger, the daunting task of maintaining quality control and fixing bugs for Adventure and Arena modes has become something we can no longer justify. We’re very proud of what we achieved with Arena, but in the end, it wasn’t as successful as we’d hoped and a custom competitive mode with few dedicated players is hard to align with our future vision for Sea of Thieves. We want to sincerely thank the unconditional communities of Arena for their creativity and passion during the almost three years of operation. If you want to know more details about this decision, check the website of Sea of Thieves.
This was just an overview of our approach to Sea of Thieves for 2022! We still have many more secrets and surprises in store, in the meantime, we hope this first look has whetted your appetite for this year.
