Hi, I’m Gareth Damian Martin, the (mostly) solo developer behind sleeper citizen. today we launch Episode: Flowthe first of three free episodes coming to the game over the next eight months, adding new characters and locations to the game as part of an ongoing story that you can follow and affect how you choose to play.
sleeper citizen, if you don’t already know, is a tabletop-inspired RPG where you’re a sleeper, a digitized human consciousness in an artificial body, owned by a corporation that wants you back. Thrust among the unknown and colorful inhabitants of the Eye, you must make friends, earn your keep, and navigate between the factions of this strange metropolis, if you hope to survive to see the next cycle.
Making sleeper citizen I wanted to create a world that felt as open and flexible as a tabletop RPG, which is a challenge when you can’t be a GM (GM stands for Game Master, the person who runs the game) in the same room as the players. and react. to your choices. Instead, I had to “pre-GM” taking into account different player options, providing a story without a “main campaign”, just different characters to meet and work with, and use time-specific events to make the world unfold. felt alive and reactive.
In Episode: Flow I’m going one step further by running a three-episode “campaign” that will tell the longest and most complex story to be featured in the game to date. It follows a fleet of refugees arriving at the station, and the player will play a key role in the events that follow their arrival.
Doing each episode in turn will allow me to react to player feedback and feedback, just like a GM would, and tell a story with a variety of twists and turns that will allow players to feel like their journey is different.
If that sounds like a trip you’d like to be on, the first update Episode: Flow launches today, so give it a try and then head over to Twitter and let me know @CitizenSleeper what you think.
I am very excited to undertake this unique experiment with the game and see how the players react now and when they reach the final in 2023. Good luck in the eye and enjoy Episode: Flow on Xbox!
NEW CITIZEN SLEEPER EPISODES Citizen Sleeper will receive new story content via three FREE episode updates, the first of which, “FLUX,” arrives on July 28. Episodes 2 and 3 are currently planned for release in October and early 2023 respectively, however the dates are yet to be confirmed. EPISODE 1: FLUX In FLUX, pressures in the Helion system have brought the first ships of a refugee flotilla to the Eye. You will meet and help those who arrive at the station before the quarantine locks them down. These episodes will tell a continuous story across all three updates, expanding on the larger narrative of the Helion System, the star system in which the Eye orbits. Each episode will also introduce new characters, the first of which is Eshe. Eshe is a stubborn and impulsive spacer, whose fate becomes entangled in that of the refugee flotilla that had begun arriving at the Eye. His story will ask the player to choose how to deal with a growing crisis that could threaten the entire station. RPG IN THE RUINS OF INTERPLANETARY CAPITALISM From the developer of In Other Waters, and featuring stunning character art by Guillaume Singelin, Citizen Sleeper is a narrative role-playing game set in Erlin’s Eye, a dilapidated space station home to thousands of people trying to survive. on the fringes of an interstellar capitalist society. You are a sleeper, a digitized human consciousness in an artificial body, owned by a corporation that wants you back. Thrust among the unknown and colorful inhabitants of the Eye, you must make friends, earn your keep, and navigate between the factions of this strange metropolis, if you hope to survive to see the next cycle. INSPIRED BY TABLETOP RPGING GAMES Citizen Sleeper uses dice, clocks and units to create a player-driven experience where you choose your path in a rich and responsive world. • ACTION DICE In each cycle you roll your dice. Assign them to a wide range of actions available at the station. With every action, you choose what and who matters to you, shaping the lives of those around you and ultimately the future of the station. • TICKING CLOCKS Clocks record both your actions and the actions of others in the station. From becoming a local at the Overlook Bar to protecting a friend from Yatagan’s enforcers, watches allow you to track your own progress and the influence you have on the world around you. • BOOSTS + SKILLS Follow the boosts, not the quests, allowing you to choose the stories and activities that interest you. As you do so, you’ll shape your character’s five abilities (Engineer, Interface, Endurance, Intuition, and Compromise), unlocking perks and bonuses that reflect and change the way you choose to live in this world.
