Horizon Zero Dawn 20 Million Sales

Horizon Zero Dawn has sold over 20 million copies on PS4 and PC. The title reached the milestone in November 2021, although Guerrilla Games chose now, a week before the release of the game’s sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, as the best time to reveal the game’s achievement.

The Success of Horizon Zero Dawn

Although more than 20 million copies were sold, the game’s popularity continued to grow thanks to PlayStation Play at Home freebies and a few stints in PlayStation Now. Players have managed to accumulate a whopping 1 billion hours of play in the post-apocalyptic world according to PlayStation blog† The game had managed to generate $400 million in revenue in 2019, although more recent figures are not available for this. Since the release of the game, there have been clothing, comic, music and table games in a merchandising line called Horizon Raw Materials, as well as a variety of other memorabilia. There are even rumors of an upcoming Tallneck LEGO set.

The biggest sign of success is, of course, the production of a sequel. Horizon Forbidden West comes out on February 14 and continues the story that began in Zero Dawn. To celebrate, Sony has released a new movie trailer for the upcoming game. Viewers beware that it’s a spoiler, so if you want to get into the game and have all of its surprises untouched, you might want to skip this one and read no further.

One of the most requested features likely to come to the game is flying mounts. While we don’t see Aloy taking to the skies on the back of a machine, the final seconds of the trailer show a tame flying machine landing behind her. I think we’ll know for sure next week.

In other news, Horizon Forbidden West is now available to preload. Those with slower internet speeds will want to use all week to download the 86GB game. Elsewhere, reports suggest that Dead Island 2 is still in development for years after its initial reveal and may even be out soon.
