In Junktopiacoming this fall in The Jackbox 9 Party PackOne person’s trash is another’s most expensive trash! We’re excited to share the game reveal today with Xbox fans looking for their next favorite party game.
At the beginning of Junktopia, the players are unlucky humans turned into frogs by a deranged wizard. He may have put you in a bind, but he’s rooting for you too! This wizard needs your help. He loves weird things about humans, but he hates their boring stories. That’s why he needs you to come up with some fun facts about them.
Our human/frog heroes embark on a quest to purchase a strange and mysterious item, give it a fun backstory, and then appraise it for resale. The player who earns the highest profit margin wins the right to transform back into his human form.
behind the game
Making Junktopia, the team wanted players to have creative freedom without it feeling overwhelming. Whether you’re a gamer who prefers guidance when writing silly stories or prefer total freedom, this game is designed with you in mind.
The items themselves are images of mostly real-life objects that are curated by the team. During the game, you are selling your item by giving it origin stories and fun facts. The game prepares you to do this by giving you prompts where you are filling in the blanks to help you get started, such as:
- A simple explanation for why the face is missing is ______.
- There is an engraving on the back that says ‘______’.
- It was originally designed for ______.
There is also an option to write your own made from scratch if you are so inspired.
According to editor-in-chief Liz Anderson, the items that made it to the game are familiar, like one would find at an antique auction, but a bit “strange” – evocative, bizarre, or wild enough to push the player to justify why that thing is the way it is
As with other Jackbox titles like obviously stupid, you have the option to submit your item for first-hand bidding or let the game share your data for you. If your item is considered to make the most profit, poof, you’re human again. Although, based on how cute these frogs are, is a loss really a loss?
The idea for this game came to game director Spencer Ham two years ago. An avid antiques dealer, he was inspired to create a Jackbox game centered around the truly bizarre items he would see in various antique malls throughout the Midwest.
The world of trashtopia
Junktopia exists in a world of magical moments and spells that fail. The game takes place in a dilapidated curio shop held together by powerful magic and duct tape. Lots of duct tape.
To create the environment where the magician is both your enemy and your friend, lead artist Owen Watson sought Zelda: Gamelon’s WandMerlin’s The sword and the stone, Ren and Stimpyand Fuzzy Lumpkins from The Powerpuff Girls by inspiration. To balance out the mage’s mischievous nature, artist Steff Egan created his lovable frog sidekick and frog avatars representing the players.
Gamers won’t be able to stop enjoying Elise Wattman’s in-game music. The music was inspired by John Hartford, Jaco Pastorius, First Aid Kit, Flatt & Scruggs, and Bela Fleck. The result is what we call “enchanted bluegrass”! We are excited to bring Junktopia to Xbox gamers this fall! Other titles already announced in The Jackbox 9 Party Pack include Roomerang, Lieb4 yearsY non-sensory.
