Marvel Studios star defends himself against criticism for cultural appropriation

An actress who participates in the Marvel Studios Cinematic Universe has made a long statement to defend herself against some criticism.

The actress awkwafina is in the best moment of his cinematographic career, since we have been able to see it in Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) and in Marvel Studios Interpreting Katy in Shang-Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings. But for some time now it has received a lot of criticism for appropriating AAVE (African American Vernacular English) for your own benefit to stand out in Hollywood. That is to say, there are people who do not like her to speak like African-Americans, since she is of Asian origin.

This is how you answered awkwafina:

“There is a sociopolitical context to everything, especially the historical context of the African-American community in this country.”

“And in life, linguistic acculturation, immigrant acculturation, and the inevitable passage of globalized internet jargon all play a factor in the fine line between offense and pop culture.”

“But as a non-black POC, I stand by the fact that I will always listen and work tirelessly to understand the history and context of AAVE. Whatever is deemed appropriate or inverse towards the progress of ANY and EVERY marginalized group.” Said the star Marvel Studios.

“But I must emphasize: Mocking, putting down, or being nasty in any way possible at the expense of others: It’s just not my nature. It never has been, and it never will be.”

“My immigrant background allowed me to forge an American identity from the movies and TV shows I watched, the kids I went to public school with, and my undying love and respect for hip hop.”

“I think as a group, Asian Americans are still trying to figure out what that journey means to them: what’s right and where they don’t belong.”

“And while I’m still learning and doing that personal work. I know for a fact that I want to spend the rest of my career doing nothing but improving our communities.”

“We do this by first failing, learning, acknowledging, listening and empathizing… And I will continue, tirelessly, to do just that.”
