Kena: Bridge of Ghosts will arrive later this month. With development now complete and the team gearing up for launch, Ember Lab was asked about their plans for the future in an interview with SoulVision Magazine. For now, the team will hold off on a sequel, but there’s always a chance they’ll explore the game’s universe through another medium, such as a TV show or movie.
Of course, the studio will focus on supporting their upcoming title for the foreseeable future. There have even been hints that we might see DLC in the form of new ghosts. As for what the team will do next, studio co-founder Josh Grier said:
I don’t know if we’ll be doing a direct sequel after this. It could be a different IP, in the same style – in terms of gameplay and the story-driven experience. kena and the universe we’ve built has a lot of storytelling capabilities, so it’s an opportunity to explore it and bring it into a more linear experience, like a TV show or movie.
The game tells the story of Kena, a spirit guide who Grier describes as “a unique protagonist that gamers haven’t seen before.” She travels to a sacred mountain shrine in an abandoned village where she is tasked with helping the deceased transition to the spirit world. This means that they have to solve their problems and help them get away from the physical world. She will be joined by little ghosts known as the Rot. They will help her solve puzzles and be successful in battle. Co-founder Mike Grier said:
The storytelling themes and the human connection and the story are universal. It’s about people struggling with loss or struggling with a mistake they’ve made and the desire to reconcile it. I hope people feel as connected to the story and themes of the game as they do to the gameplay.
After a short delay, Kena: Bridge of Ghosts will be released on September 21 on PS4 and PS5, with players getting both versions of the game. Available as a Standard Edition or Digital Deluxe Edition, the latter comes with a soundtrack, a silver staff for Kena, and a gold Rotten skin. Those who pre-order the game will receive “a very special pack of Celebration hats.”
