Old LittleBigPlanet games had their servers shut down by Sony

Sony has announced that it has retired its servers for older LittleBigPlanet titles to “protect the LittleBigPlanet community”.

In particular, online servers for LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet 2, LittleBigPlanet 3 (PS3 version only, and LittleBigPlanet PS Vita have been permanently taken offline.

LittleBigPlanet has been going through a rough patch in recent months as servers have been taken offline for about six weeks following a reported DDOS campaign. According to a report on Eurogamer, this was the result of a disgruntled fan who apparently wasn’t too impressed with Sony’s handling of the franchise.

Later, a number of users got offensive in-game error messages that popped up unexpectedly, with Sony taking servers completely offline as a result of the ongoing attacks.

One bit of good news coming out of this is that all of the community content published on the servers for the earlier games will be available for the PS4 version of LittleBigPlanet 3. Anyway, here’s Sony’s official statement on this:

We would like to apologize for the extended downtime of the LittleBigPlanet server and thank you all for your patience while we worked on this issue.

We have no doubt that this news will be a disappointment to many of you. Ultimately, this is the best way to protect the LittleBigPlanet community and keep our online environment safe.
