The announcement of NEO: The World Ends With You in 2020 came as a surprise. No one expected a sequel to The World Ends With You, but here we are. A demo of the game is available on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
Story and world
The story of NEO: The World Ends With You is set in a town called Shibuya. You follow the two main characters named Rindo and his friend Fret. Rindo notices that something strange is going on in Shibuya. At some point they find themselves in a game called Reaper’s Game. The aim of the game is to complete various tasks in order to progress in the story. It is important that you do not finish last.
The demo of NEO: The World Ends With You gives you the opportunity to play two levels. I have to say that I am very surprised with the story so far. It is very mysterious, which keeps you invested. Shibuya feels like a real city. This is partly because of the story, but also because of the characters in the world. The way the game is written gives the game a sense of realism.
The gameplay of NEO: The World Ends With You is quite special. When you walk through the world you control Rindo. You can see Shibuya in two different forms. The first shape is the world as it normally appears. There is not much to see there, but the second form, on the other hand, is! The second form transforms Shibuya in which you see different elements of the Reaper’s Game. These include a different use of colors, clear barriers, icons of enemies to fight against and the ability to read the minds of the inhabitants of Shibuya. Mind reading is a fun way to bring life to Shibuya, but in some instances it helps with gameplay. That’s because of the remind Fret’s ability, which helps you progress on certain missions.
The combat is also very special. You fight against enemies by using different types of pins. You get it after fighting enemies, but also during missions. You give the pins to the members of your party. They can be leveled during combat and in some instances can be evolved into a new form. That’s not the only thing that makes the combat interesting. While fighting, you use different buttons on your controller to attack a party member. If you play well enough, you also get the opportunity to use a special move. The buttons are chosen based on the pin you use. Think of the combat style of Final Fantasy XV, but that you control your party in real time. It takes some getting used to, but it is certainly doable! You shouldn’t underestimate the combat either, because the pins work with a cooldown system. If you use the same moves your pin will be empty and you will have to wait for it to be recharged. That happens quite quickly during combat, so you can use that character again soon.
NEO: The World Ends With You is a game I’m really looking forward to. The demo has made me want to play the game from day one and I definitely intend to! It’s given me a good idea of what the game will offer, while leaving a good amount of mystery behind. The progress you made in the demo can be carried over to the full game. So no reason not to give the demo a chance if you’re a fan of JRPGs or if the game sounds interesting! NEO: The World Ends With You will be released on July 27 on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, with the PC version coming at a later, undisclosed date.
