According to the latest data from Famitsu, Sony’s PS5 enjoyed a stellar first year in Japan, selling 942,798 units in 2021 — ten times the number of Xbox Series X/S consoles sold in the same period.
While Nintendo Switch was the dominant platform in Japan last year, selling a whopping 5.3 million units in the country, PS5 still performed solidly amid stock shortages and greatly overshadowed Microsoft’s efforts in Japan.
In fact, the Xbox Series X/S struggled so much last year that even the PS4 managed to sell it at just over 8,000 units.
It’s worth remembering that traditionally Microsoft hasn’t had much luck gaining traction in the Japanese market, with Sony and Nintendo pretty much dominated there. Still, the numbers are pretty extreme.
