Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Tech Analysis Reveals Fast Load Times, Amazing-Looking Fur, and Amazing Ray Tracing Effects

Digital Foundry has gone live with its technical analysis of: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and suffice it to say that the game is a great showpiece for PS5’s capabilities, with ultra-fast loading times, astonishing fur effects and an amazing use of ray tracing.

The game looks so stunning at times that it resembles a pre-rendered movie during cutscenes, and the level of detail isn’t just applied to the main characters. When using photo mode, DF notes that the same level of care and attention has been given to NPCs and enemies.

Ray tracing is extensively distributed by Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, especially with reflections that look beautiful. As for the SSD, it’s described as a “game-changer” in DF’s report, with the Rift mechanic allowing two separate worlds to be displayed simultaneously thanks to the SSD and GPU.

Oh, and let’s not forget those lovely fur effects:

Ratchet and Rivet steal the show with a beautiful level of detail. Insomniac has handed over his hair strand system first used in Miles Morales to Ratchet, allowing fine detail in the fur of his many characters. It seems to use a combination of strands and shell textures to create varied coat thickness.
