The wait for the TV series The Last of Us seems to be taking longer than expected. While many expected it to come out this year, filming is underway, and an HBO executive stated it won’t likely launch until sometime in 2023. The first season will be a retelling of the events of the first game and the Left Behind DLC.
What is the release date of The Last of Us HBO series?
Speaking to Deadline about The Last of Us TV series, HBO’s Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys stated: “It won’t air in 2022 – they’re still filming in Canada. I imagine you’ll see it in “23 will see.” Unfortunately, those are the only details Bloys gave about the release date.
While the first season includes the original The Lost of Us title, further seasons have not been discussed in depth. Producer Craig Mazin has said there will likely be a second season if the first does well, but what material would it be about? It would be interesting to see some of the time between the first and second game, and we’re willing to bet that’s when the show will end.
We do know that the TV show won’t exactly follow the game. In particular, Jeffrey Pierce, who played Tommy in the game, is cast as Perry, a rebel. This original character will play a big part in the events that will unfold. Tommy, played by Gabriel Luna, will also likely play a much bigger role in the story than in the first game.
Previous attempts to make a The Last of U movie or TV adaptation have failed. At one point, a Sam Raimi-produced movie was in the works at Sony Pictures, which was cancelled. A short animation film suffered the same fate.
In other news, Sony is planting a tree every time players unlock this Horizon Forbidden West trophy, and some fans are having trouble upgrading to the PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077.
