The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the most notorious tales in all of American horror. Drenched in the desaturated tones of Texan summer and vibrating with the sounds of metal on metal. How do you bring all of that into an interactive space and create an experience like no other in modern gaming?

Gun Interactive is no stranger to multiplayer asymmetrical horror games, having created one of the blueprints for the genre with Friday the 13th: The Game. But just as each element of Friday the 13th: The Game had to adjust the franchise to almost obsessive levels, the approach with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre it rests on the same cornerstone of authenticity and adds another objective: innovation.

This approach to authenticity refers not only to the film, but to the region itself. Complete with photogrammetry and scanned reference of the places and locations seen in the iconic film. The team traveled to and around Austin, shooting sweeping skies, every flower, every texture, all the little things that come together to add up to the best. feeling to be in that part of the country. But this did not stop at the landscape and vegetation. The original gas station, the relocated family farm, and every minor detail found within were painstakingly documented and used in the game.

The film studio, region, tone, and mood are all part of Gun’s authenticity. But what about the sound? Surely, if you’ve seen the original 1974 film, you’ve noticed that the film’s sound design has layers of awkward discord and industrial noise woven together to create a form of music like you’ve never heard before. Enter a device like you’ve never seen before: the Apprehension Engine.

apprehension engine

Gun CEO and President Wes Keltner sought out a rare instrument in this world, the Apprehension Engine. And with the help of lead audio designer Ross Tregenza of Sumo Digital, they began to build something that could bring the sound of authenticity to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. All the photogrammetry and research, now coupled with building this unique soundscape to play, create tension and release it, how does all this go from abstract to interactive? How does this interactive entrance also innovate? Not satisfied with a new skin In our previous entry into the asymmetric horror genre, innovation became another cornerstone, another pillar of the Gun team.

Team-based, three-on-four play and stealth as the primary defense mechanism for victims was a great start to building, iterating, and discovering the core loops within The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The uneven match structure, the power imbalance between The Family, complete with a chainsaw-wielding menace, and a cast of victims united in desperation to simply survive, that’s what the game would ultimately be about. The sledgehammer is apparently against you, but you still fight, still fight to free yourself from The Family. These concepts not only checked the box for something different, but shaped the game itself.

shot victims

Our gang of victims have full and detailed backstories, reasons for being the way they are, and now, finally, you get to see just a part of how that plays out in the game. The creation of these characters has been very important to Gun, and every aspect of them had to be fully fleshed out, fully molded to inform their traits and attributes in the game. Knowing that we have five capable characters at your disposal for a four-person team means synchronizing with the other players around you to duplicate their efforts or balance out their shortcomings. Cooperation is the most powerful tool at their disposal, but on their own, they are all capable of putting up a great fight, in their own unique and distinctive ways.

And so, the stage is set. María Flores has disappeared and the local police seem to have stalled in their search for her. Her younger sister, Ana, along with some of Maria’s college friends, embark on a search mission to find Maria. She plays as Julie, Leland, Connie, Sonny or Ana and take on The Cook, The Hitchhiker and of course Leatherface. From the iconic family home to the gas station and even a local slaughterhouse, she remembers to keep quiet, turn off the lights and stay in the shadows.
