The Punisher star Jon Bernthal admits he needs Marvel to be dark enough again
Actor Jon Bernthal has spoken about how he would like to return to his character as Frank Castle (The Punisher) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios is introducing dozens of new characters during its latest phase. The movie of The Eternals will bring a new team of Superheroes to the MCU and projects like the X-Men and The Fantastic Four promise even more additions to this shared universe. While many are anticipating new faces, some fans are hoping to see the return of other familiar faces. Productions of Marvel Television What Daredevil, Agents of SHIELD, Luke Cage or Jessica Jones among others have not yet seen their characters jump into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Some of them served to create their own television universe before the heroes joined in Defenders in 2017.Although these series refer to events that occurred in the MCU, it has been accepted that they took place in a universe separate from the canonical plot.
In mid-2021, the distribution rights for these heroes returned to Marvel Studios, giving these characters free rein to appear in future MCU projects. While it’s unclear how Marvel plans to do this, a Netflix show star has high hopes for a possible comeback.
Jon Bernthal talks about the possible return of the Punisher at Marvel Studios
In an interview with Scott King of Forbes, the star of The punisher, Jon Bernthal, explained how he would like to return to the character in the main MCU timeline.
“When it comes to the future, he is a character that I really feel I have in my bones and in my heart. I am really grateful that I had the opportunity, and what will happen in the future I don’t know. It’s not about whether they want to do it again or not. I don’t really prescribe anything for those kinds of decisions. It’s just about, if they do, will we be able to get it right? Will it be dark enough? Will you be brave enough? Are we going to give the fans, and the people to whom this character means so much, are we going to give them what they deserve? And if the answer is yes, man oh man, I would love that ».
After first introducing the Netflix version of The punisher in the second season of Daredevil Along with Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, Jon Bernthal became the headliner for 26 episodes of the Frank Castle spinoff series. Doing everything in his power to avenge the deaths of his wife and children, Bernthal brought a sense of despair and ruthlessness to the role.
As with the other five Netflix series, The punisher he deepened his description of violence and brutality. Frank faced villains like Billy Russo, John Pilgrim, and many other enemies. It’s clear that if Bernthal were to return to this role, that same level of determination would have to be a central part of the story to continue Frank Castle’s journey in the right way.
Although the distribution rights of The punisher have returned to Marvel Studios along with their Netflix counterparts, it will likely be some time until the MCU reboots these heroes and adjusts them to everything that was established after the infinity saga. Still, Bernthal seems to be open to the idea of returning to character as long as he gets a chance to really go back to being how he was shown on the Netflix series.
Either way, rumors have been heard of the return of Charlie Cox and Vicent D ‘Onofrio in their respective roles in Daredevil, perhaps in Spider-man: No way home, or in Hawkeye, so the return of The punisher It wouldn’t be so far-fetched in the short term.
What do you think? Would you like to see Jon Bernthal’s Punisher in the MCU soon?
