First of all, let me start by saying that our team, here in Rzeszow, is beyond excited about the launch of Hike to Yomi, available today for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and with Game Pass. We’re really happy to be able to talk about our game because we essentially put all our heart and soul into creating it.

Hike to Yomi is a game heavily inspired by the so-called chanbara eiga, something most of us simply know as old samurai from the 60s and 70s. We pay close attention to pretty much every aspect of these movies, be it the camera work, editing or lighting.

Hike to Yomi

Nearly every shot in the game was inspired by these movies, all in an effort to achieve an atmosphere and style to match. Speaking of shots, we had to meddle a lot with his composition. We had to separate the planes not only by distance but also by the weight of their tonality, whether it was bright, medium or dark.

Since we choose to realize Hike to Yomi as a black and white game, it was important to develop a proper relationship between light and shadow. We also had to focus on how to draw players’ attention to certain places on the screen and always create a visually clear area of action. After all, we didn’t want any obstacles to obstruct the player’s vision in the heat of a fight.

Hike to Yomi

Another time-consuming aspect was figuring out how to create an in-game communication channel with players. Note that we were limited to black, white, and shades of gray only. That was something we struggled with at first, but in the end, I think we made it.

We also wanted to keep Hike to Yomi historically accurate. In addition to doing our own research, we invited Aki Tabei Matsunaga, a historian who specializes in the Edo period, to the project to help us. He helped us immensely and even made sure the dialogue was stylized to correspond to the Japanese used during that time period. We believed that in order to maintain the old samurai movie vibe of our game, we needed to make it as similar to those movies as possible. We tried to achieve an effect where a non-player watches the game and at first can’t tell if it’s a movie or an actual video game.

Hike to Yomi

To deepen the sense of immersion, we also got rid of certain mechanics that are typical of 2.5D games: jumping and passing through enemies. We feel that such actions would take the player out of the environment we are trying to integrate them into. That is why combat consists of 3 pillars in Hike to Yomi– Timing, stamina control and combination of different fighting styles depending on the enemy you encounter. At the same time, we wanted to make sure that the combat and gameplay appeal to both casual players, who are excited about the game’s overall aesthetic and feel, and more advanced players who enjoy more of a challenge in terms of combat. We want dueling enthusiasts to feel truly satisfied after each successful match.

Long story short, we really just want the player to be completely immersed in our game, from A to Z. We want them to engage with it to such an extent that they feel compelled to finish the game, just like watching a good movie. ! If it’s good, there’s no way you wouldn’t want to stay until the end. However, unlike the movies, we are giving players the opportunity to choose their own path, so choose wisely!

Hike to Yomi

Once again, we the team hope that all players will have a ton of fun playing our game. We, for example, cannot say enough about the incredible journey that was the creation of Hike to Yomi it has been for us. We feel like we’ve become top weebs just by making this game. You always wanted to be part of a samurai movie, now is your chance!
