Worms NFTs canceled after backlash

Team17 announced yesterday that they have teamed up with Reality Gaming Group to create a series of NFTs based on their worms franchisee. However, in an extremely rapid turnaround, the publisher has now announced that they are canceling the limited edition ‘MetaWorms’ NFTs following backlash from fans, their developer partners, and even their own employees.

Why have the MetaWorms NFTs been canceled?

Team17 claimed that the MetaWorms NFTs significantly reduced the amount of energy used per transaction, therefore they are said to be “environmentally friendly”. Unfortunately, this was a claim that many of their developer partners did not believe. Overcooked developer Ghost Town games confirmed that they did not support NFTs and that they believed they carried “too high environmental and social costs”. Yooka-Laylee developer Playtonic followed by a statement that they did not endorse the use of NFTs in “any aspect of their business”. Others to condemn the move included going under developer Aggro Krab going so far as to state that they would not work with Team17 on further titles unless the decision was reversed.

The statements caused Team17 to confirm that Eurogamer they had “no plans to introduce NFTs or play-to-earn NFT mechanics in any of the indie games label titles.” Despite this, further criticism from fans and Team17 team members led to the project’s cancellation today. team17 said:

Team17 today announces an end to the MetaWorms NFT project. We have listened to our teamsters, development partners and our games communities, and the concerns they have expressed, and have therefore made the decision to step back from the NFT space.

The project would instead have resulted in the creation of independent MetaWorms NFTs based on artwork from the entire 26 years of the worms franchisee. A partnership with Coin 4 Planet would also have ensured that a portion of every sale was forwarded to Refeed Farms, which use vertical worm beds to replenish the soil rather than fertilizer. However, none of this will happen anymore.

In other news: the second free crossover mission has arrived Far Cry 6 today, featuring Dani on a vendetta against the military along with a Rambo superfan. Elsewhere, four games were added to PlayStation Now today with Grand Theft Auto Vice City – The Definitive Edition leader in the squad.
